Linguistic Landscape

A road sign is an iconic transcription of a message. They carry culturally embedded knowledge and can give information regarding the hierarchy of language in a place of multiple languages.

 Linguistic landscape refers to the "visibility and salience of languages on public and commercial signs in a given territory or region" (Landry and Bourhis 1997:23).
